SECURITY GUIDE

How to create a secure password

A secure password is long, unique and random. It does not need to be hard to remember if you use a password manager.

Choose length over apparent complexity

Use at least 12 characters for regular accounts and 16 or more for email, financial services and social networks. A long password offers more possible combinations and better resists automated attempts.

Do not reuse passwords

Using the same password for two services turns a breach into a risk for both accounts. Generate a different password for every site and store it in a trusted password manager.

Avoid predictable data and patterns

Do not use names, dates, favourite teams, sequences such as 123456, or obvious changes such as replacing a letter with a number. Modern attacks try these variations automatically.

Enable two-step verification

Two-factor authentication adds a layer of protection even if someone discovers your password. Prefer an authenticator app or security key when the service allows it.
